Weekend trip to the lagos of Italy

trip to Italy

Spread the word!

Milano, Lago di Como, Lago Maggiore, Lago di Garda… The beauty of northern Italy

It has passed almost a year since I made this trip and it’s time to share these wonderful views with you! Let’s start with Milan. We traveled from Malaga to the Malpensa Airport.  But if you’re travelling with a low-budget company, it’s very probable that your plane will land in Bergamo Airport (Aeropuerto de Orio al Serio). It is located in the city of Bergamo, only 50km from Milan’s city center. There are buses all day long every few minutes that go the Central Station in Milan, Malpensa Airport or other part of the city. Once in the Central Railway Station, you’re just a metro trip away from the center.

You can see in the photos the famous Milan Cathedral – Duomo di Milano. It took almost 6 centuries to finish it, this gothic cathedral is the biggest in Italy if we don’t count the St. Peter’s Bassilica in Vatican city, of course.

I always travel with the things that occupy the most space so I save from the suitcase. Here is what I chose for the trip:

Jeans – Zara

Yellow top – Zara

Shoes – Zara

Bag – Valentino

Jacket – Mojito

Lemon necklace – Mango

First lake – Lago di Como

For our first night we decided to stay in Bellagio, a little town located between the two arms of the lake Como. The hotel Borgo le Terraze (www.borgoleterrazze.com) is located just outside the town up the hill with spectacular views. Not to brag but this is the view from my terraze:

Bellagio is a place with literally 4 vertical and 2 horizontal streets but it is more than charming and a vacation destination for celebrities. Franz Liszt, Hungarian composer, and  Lord Byron were captivated by the views and used them as inspiration for their work. And the famous Bulgarian poet, Pencho Slaveykov, died in his house in the small town of Brunate, Lake Como.

We had the evening left from the first day – perfect for a quick promenade and a dinner.

On the next day we had more time to see the town before departing for the next lake. In any case, two hours are the maximum and you’re ready to go.

Look at the views! Can you imagine something more tranquil, serene… perfect? In order to go to the next lake, we decided to take the ferry – quick and really pleasant escape instead of having to drive around the whole lake.

Second lake – Lago Maggiore

The next stop after the ferry is Lago Maggiore. We passed through Switzerland on the way, as part of the lake enters in their territory. It is a obligatory part of the trip to eat some swiss ice cream – Mövenpick. My parents are travelers and lovers of all things italian, but most of all gelato (italian for ice cream) and they say that there is no other flavor as this one. And I can say I agree. Caramel with  little fudggy pieces inside… Pistacchio… three flavours of orange in one ball… I can go all day long.

So, Lago Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. For our stop here we chose the town Stresa with beautiful views to the Borromean islands. Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori, owned by the Borromeo family are little islands between Stresa and Verbania. The latter is a little fishers’ village but the other two are a luxurious masterpiece of architects and gardeners with astonishing gardens full of peacocks. Isola Bella is made as a guest residence with beautiful white peacocks and Isola Madre, the biggest of them all, is home of the family.

On the second day I have used:

Pants Black & White – Zara

Shoes – Zara

Jacket – Stradivarius

Black top with embroidery – Zara

Ring – Stradivarius

Umbrella – Zara

Third lake – Lago di Garda

At the end of this beautiful day we reached our final destination  – the largest lake in Italy, Lago di Garda. We chose to stay in Sirmione, a little town located in the middle of the lake with less than 1 km between the two shores. Personally, it is my favourite! In the entrance of the historical village is located Rocca Scaligera, a castle rebuild in 13th century, made as a fortress to protect the town:

Passing through the castle, we enter in a beautiful village full of little streets and nooks worthy of your admiration. It is so romantic with its views of the lake and little villas surrounded by greenery:

Interesting fact, it is full of gelaterias that offer let’s just say… different flavours. Like chocolate with hot pepper.

Gardaland

The last day of our trip we decided to spend in a theme park called Gardaland, just around the corner from Sirmione. Developing every year, it is the perfect place not only for children but for adults as well. From the wonderland and home of Prezzemoto (the park’s mascot) to the wildest rides like Blue Tornado (you can imagine it just from the name…) – there is a something for the whole family. And if you are an explorer like me, one day won’t cut it! There are tickets for groups, family discounts or season passes – it’s up to you!

Obviously I didn’t take my camera with me so I can’t show you my experience but here’s just a little part of it and you can see the rest in their official website:

P.S. We are a bit wet after some kids decided it’s fun to shoot with water guns while we were on a slide. It was fun, actually!
